Museum of Favelas announces December schedule
The Museum of Favelas, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture, Economy, and Creative Industries of the State of São Paulo under the management of IDG, presents its December schedule. With always free admission, the intense agenda - featuring both in-person and online activations designed for a global audience - opens with the collective exhibition "Portraits and Stories of Cooperation and Volunteerism." The Communicators project, carried out in partnership with the NGO Atados and curated by Léo Britto, brought together ten peripheral artists with the aim of photographing ten organizations scattered throughout the north and east zones of São Paulo. For the exhibition, graffiti artist Rodrigo created a mural that references the communities where these organizations operate. Starting on December 2nd, the exhibition runs until January 7th.
On Wednesday (6), the final "Crochê de Quebrada" workshop will take place, led by the Artisan Collective Chave. The proposal aims to provide a reintegration experience for young graduates, the population receiving assistance in the territory's facilities, as well as residents, using crochet as a therapeutic and creative tool. During the course, participants will learn basic crochet techniques, focusing specifically on making hats and caps.
On Friday (8), from 2 PM to 4 PM, the Museum of Favelas hosts the virtual meeting "Ancestral Seed: Meeting for Educators and Teachers." This event will involve the sharing of experiences from the Education Nucleus, with a focus on bilingual storytelling in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese, titled "Step by Step." This narrative aims to share the learning of different dances and rhythms through playful practices, aiming for accessibility to different audiences. During the meeting, educators will share methodologies for activity construction, with the goal of promoting more inclusive educational practices. Registration is required on the website.
On Saturday (9), at 11 AM, the storytelling event "Step by Step" will take place. This activity aims to provide the learning of different dances and rhythms through playful practices unfolding in various museum spaces. The narrative will be presented in Libras and Portuguese, encouraging participation of the body as a means to make learning more accessible through touch, sight, and hearing. The focus is on reaching different senses, especially those of children.
Both programs are part of the Inclusive Turn, taking place from December 2nd to 9th this year with the theme "United Voices, Equal Rights!" The Inclusive Turn is a program of the State Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (SEDPcD) and aims to stimulate the joint participation of people with and without disabilities in inclusive actions, featuring an extensive accessible program in partnership with various sectors and volunteer collaborators.
On the same day (9), at 1 PM, in the Garden of the Museum of Favelas, the Suburban Poetry takes place, led by Alessandro Buzo, who in this edition invites Angelo Canuto, Luiz Fernando Prod, Daniel Fagundes, Selective Sativa, Daniel Minchoni, Poetas do Tietê, Mauricio Mazzo, Maria Aline Soares, Catita, Raquel Almeida, Onézio Cruz, and Vitória Lobo. The presentation also includes food and drink stalls.
On this same day, there is also the Favela Party: Prevention Dance, in the Garden of the Museum of Favelas. The event is focused on Ballroom and vogue culture, featuring a vogue class with Lucas Alfred, followed by a pocket show with MC Xuxu and DJ Lucas Navarro, and at the end of the day, the grand celebration of Ballroom Fokatrua. Throughout the day, the institution will also offer HIV and Syphilis testing and a fair with LGBT+ entrepreneurs. The action is carried out in partnership with the Megê Collective and the Casa dy Fokatrua Collective.
"This Favela Party will bring this great expression, which did not originate in Brazil but was born outside it, but has reached all the alleys and lanes, favelas, and slums, which is the ballroom culture. And Casa Dy Fokatrua is a space built by trans women, by people who are very interested in changing this visual aesthetic, including an aesthetic already established in the great ballroom creations. So come with us to perceive a new aesthetic emerging, or still the raw and naked aesthetics of the periphery, as is what we want to present here, bringing lightness and showing that art is not what is set, but innovates very often," emphasizes Carla Zulu.
The exhibitions "Favela-Raiz: A Manifesto Occupation" and the exhibition "The Balance of the Slopes" are also on display. The "Favela-Raiz" exhibition is available on the Google Arts and Culture platform worldwide. It is worth noting that the manifesto occupation marked the opening of the Museum of Favelas on November 25, 2022.
