'Chegou Fim de Semana' transforms the Museum of Favela with aquatic installation

The Museum of Favela, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture, Creative Economy, and Industry of the State of São Paulo under the management of IDG, presents "Chegou Fim de Semana" (The Weekend Has Arrived). Aimed at the children's audience, the initiative - with activations on December 10th and 16th, and January 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm - will transform the cultural facility with the installation of water tanks, providing not only fun but also stimulating important reflections: what are the forms of entertainment that the periphery has access to? How does class division interfere with the quality of life for each individual?

Based on these themes, artist and photographer Daniela Machado, in collaboration with curator and journalist Carolina Lauriano, are responsible for bringing the spirit of the proposal to visual life, referencing the iconic lyrics of the song "Fim de Semana no Parque" (Weekend in the Park) by Racionais MC’s. The composition, which begins with a narrative of what seems to be a typical weekend, quickly builds into a crescendo of denunciations and points about the rights and access of the most vulnerable portion of the city's population. Similar to the poetry of rap, the project highlights these contradictions of leisure faced by young people from different economic backgrounds.

The proposal, carried out by the artist, arises from the partnership between the Favela Museum and ASP, an association led by Daniela and Carolina Lauriano, through the projects Refúgio and Expresso, which since August has enabled access for young people from the peripheries through the exhibition "O Equilíbrio dos Barrancos" (The Balance of Slopes) and also the implementation of a weekly program with art workshops. The continuity of this partnership represents the institution's commitment to engaging proposals that broaden access to art in a playful way for these young people.

"I was born and raised in Capão Redondo; my adolescence was marked by the now-extinct FEBEM-SP during 7 months of internment. Upon my release, I received support from yoga teacher Márcia de Luca, one of the pioneers of yoga in Brazil, who supported me financially through my studies up to university. From Capão Redondo to FEBEM, from access to private education and international travel, I observe the discrepancy between social classes and propose a new design for the present and future with the art projects I direct at ASP alongside Carollina Lauriano. My proposal is focused on young people who come from the same reality I came from, not disregarding the most diverse layers. Currently, I work with 40 young people in a room within the Museum of Favela. They have classes in drawing, painting, music production, and watercolor, as well as being on display with the exhibition 'Equilíbrio dos Barrancos.' Thinking about the holiday season and what these young people will do, I propose this activity along with reflection," adds Daniela Machado.

In it, beyond being an artistic object, the Museum becomes a space for not only intellectual but also playful support.
