On March 16th, The Museum of Tomorrow won the MIPIM international award, in the category "Most Innovative Green Building". Marking the revitalization of the Port Region of Rio de Janeiro, the Museum features, among its differentials, the technology used to capture solar energy and the use of the cold waters from the bottom of the Guanabara Bay in the air conditioning system. The winners of the 2017 edition of the awards were announced at a ceremony in Cannes, France.

"Architecture and content, location within urban space and integration with the environment: everything in this museum converges to an awareness of how the choices made today by each of us impact on a common Tomorrow. Receiving this recognition is a source of great pride for us at the Roberto Marinho Foundation, and also for our partners who, together with us, created and take care of this museum”, stated José Roberto Marinho, president of the Roberto Marinho Foundation, an institution linked to the Globo Group and responsible for the conception of the Museum of Tomorrow.

In 2016, the sustainable guidelines of the Museum of Tomorrow were also recognized with the LEED certification: Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), granted by the Green Building Council - the main American institution in the labeling of green buildings. It was the first museum in the country to obtain this recognition at the second highest level of classification – there are four: certificate, silver, gold and platinum.

Once we have achieved Gold in LEED certification in 2016, this is yet another recognition of this work made by many hands, which strengthens the culture of sustainable building practices in this country. With more than ten international recognitions, the Museum of Tomorrow has been gaining global notoriety. In 2016, the British award Leading Culture Destinations Awards – considered the ‘Oscar of Museums’ – chose the Carioca institution as "Best New Museum of the Year". The Museum of Tomorrow also rose to the podium with one gold and two bronze medals at the International Design & Communication Awards (IDCA) in Canada.

MIPIM Awards

Created in 1991, the MIPIM Award is an international competition that selects the most notable projects already built or under construction worldwide. The awards are held during the MIPIM annual fair, the largest real estate event in the world. The Museum of Tomorrow competed with the Siemens headquarters in Munich, the 119 Ebury Street residential building in London, and the Värtan Bioenergy plant in Stockholm.

Museum of Tomorrow

The construction of the Museum is included in the set of works of the City Administration of Rio de Janeiro carried out by the Porto Novo Consortium, through the country's largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The Museum of Tomorrow is an initiative of the City Administration of Rio de Janeiro, conceived and carried out jointly with the Roberto Marinho Foundation, an institution linked to the Globo Group, with Santander Bank as its Master Sponsor and Shell as its maintainer. It also has Engie, IBM and IRB Brazil Reinsurance as Sponsors, Globo Group as strategic partner, and the support of the State Government, through the State Secretariat for the Environment, and of the Federal Government, through the Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (Finep) and the Culture Incentive Law. The institution is part of the museum network of the Municipal Department of Culture. The Institute of Development and Management (IDG) is responsible for the management of the Museum.
